Building an Inclusive Grande Prairie.
A Place for Everyone to Call Home

Grande Prairie is strongest when all its voices are heard and all its members thrive. This page shines a light on the invaluable contributions of our First Nations, Métis, Inuit communities – the original caretakers of this Treaty 8 land – and the ambitious newcomers who choose to build their lives here. We acknowledge the unique challenges they face, from systemic barriers to finding essential resources and integration support. Join me in a purpose-driven commitment to create a Grande Prairie that genuinely welcomes, supports, and champions the success of every Indigenous person and every new Canadian.

Grande Prairie is built on Treaty 8 territory, the traditional lands of the Beaver, Cree, and Dene peoples, and a vibrant home to Métis Nation citizens. We acknowledge the profound contributions Indigenous peoples have made and continue to make to our community. Yet, we must also acknowledge the systemic barriers, racism, and intergenerational trauma that too many Indigenous residents still face. From disproportionate rates of homelessness and challenges accessing culturally safe services, to the ongoing impacts of discrimination, it's clear that true reconciliation requires concrete action and sustained commitment from our City Council.

As your Councillor, I will:

Advance Truth & Reconciliation through Concrete Action: I will commit to implementing and actively reporting on the City's Reconciliation Plan, ensuring it moves beyond words to tangible outcomes. This includes regular consultation with local Elders, Indigenous community leaders, and organizations like the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre. I will advocate for ongoing Indigenous cultural competency training for all city staff and council members, fostering a deeper understanding and respect within our municipal operations.

Address Systemic Racism and Discrimination: I will support initiatives that actively combat racism and discrimination in all its forms within our city, working with law enforcement, community groups, and the Alberta Human Rights Commission to create a truly safe and equitable Grande Prairie for Indigenous peoples. We need to ensure that reports of discrimination are taken seriously and that mechanisms are in place to address them effectively.

Improve Access to Culturally Safe Services: I will relentlessly advocate to Alberta Health Services and the provincial government for increased funding and expansion of culturally appropriate health and social services for Indigenous peoples in Grande Prairie, including mental health, addiction, and primary care programs. I will work to ensure that city-funded social programs are designed in collaboration with Indigenous organizations and are easily accessible, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive.

Tackle Indigenous Homelessness and Housing Insecurity: Recognizing the disproportionate rates of Indigenous homelessness, I will prioritize and support Indigenous-led housing initiatives and culturally appropriate supportive housing options in Grande Prairie. This means active engagement with Indigenous housing providers and community partners to develop solutions that meet specific needs. I will advocate for more provincial and federal investment in affordable housing solutions that prioritize the needs of Indigenous families and individuals.

Support Indigenous Education and Economic Opportunities: I will champion partnerships between the city, educational institutions, and Indigenous communities to promote culturally relevant education and support programs that help Indigenous youth succeed. I will support initiatives that create equitable economic opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs and businesses, and work to eliminate barriers to employment for Indigenous job seekers.

Celebrate Indigenous Culture and Heritage: I will support and promote Indigenous cultural events, language revitalization efforts, and traditional practices within Grande Prairie, recognizing their vital role in our shared history and future. We MUST continue to acknowledge and honor the traditional territories we reside on and integrate Indigenous perspectives into city planning and public spaces.

Grande Prairie is a city of opportunity, and our growing newcomer population is a testament to that. They bring incredible talent, diverse cultures, and a vital boost to our economy. However, many newcomers face significant barriers when settling here, from underemployment and credential recognition to finding affordable housing and navigating our services. If we truly want Grande Prairie to thrive, we must ensure every resident, regardless of where they were born, feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to contribute fully.

As your Councillor, I will:

Strengthen Newcomer Support Services:

  • I will advocate for increased funding and resources for organizations like the Grande Prairie Centre for Newcomers, Grande Prairie Council for Lifelong Learning, and the Grande Prairie Local Immigration Partnership (GPLIP). These groups are on the front lines of supporting newcomers, and we need to ensure they have the capacity to meet growing demand for services like language support, settlement assistance, and job search guidance.

  • I will support the GPLIP's efforts to create a centralized, user-friendly hub for newcomer information and resources, making it easier to find everything from housing assistance to healthcare navigation.

Facilitate Economic Integration & Credential Recognition:

  • We must work closely with local employers, Northwestern Polytechnic, and provincial/federal partners to address the challenges of credential recognition. This includes advocating for faster and more efficient processes so skilled newcomers can contribute their expertise to our local workforce without unnecessary delays.

  • I will support programs that connect newcomers directly with local businesses for mentorship, internships, and employment opportunities, helping to bridge the gap between their skills and local job market needs.

Promote Welcoming & Inclusive Communities:

  • As a City Councillor, I will champion initiatives that foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. This includes supporting cultural events, community-led integration programs, and public education campaigns that celebrate our diversity.

  • We need to ensure that city services are accessible and culturally sensitive to our diverse population, breaking down language and cultural barriers wherever possible.

Address Housing & Transportation Needs:

  • I will work to increase the availability of affordable and suitable housing options for newcomers, recognizing that securing stable housing is fundamental to successful integration.

  • I will advocate for improved public transit options that better serve all areas of our city, particularly where many newcomers reside, ensuring they have reliable access to jobs, services, and community activities.

Advocate for Provincial & Federal Support:

  • I will be a strong voice to the provincial and federal governments, advocating for increased funding for settlement and integration programs, and for policies that support the successful integration of immigrants into communities like Grande Prairie.
